A Cosmetic Dentist Discusses Dental Crown Options

cosmetic dentist Chicago, IL

Looking for a cosmetic dentist because you are in need of one or more dental crowns? Many people are choosing to see this type of dentist when they are in need of one or more cosmetic services, with crowns being one of the more common restorative options needed. According to the American Dental Association, the purpose of a crown is to make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks.

About cosmetic dentistry

Want to learn about cosmetic services from a cosmetic dentist? Smart. Learning about the different cosmetic options now available is a great idea, as cosmetic dentists are dental professionals who have decided to focus on creating positive changes to their patients' teeth so they can have a great smile. Many people are now choosing to undergo one or more cosmetic treatments, as dental advancements allow for many cosmetic treatments to be performed in just one or two dental appointments. Popular cosmetic treatments include teeth whitening services, dental bonding, dental implants and dental crowns.

Why a Dental Crown vs a Veneer?

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

  1. To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
  2. To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
  3. To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left
  4. To hold a dental bridge in place
  5. To cover misshapened or severely discolored teeth
  6. To cover a dental implant
  7. To make a cosmetic modification

A veneer is a porcelain or zirconia jacket that covers a whole tooth.  Veneers are for pure cosmetic reasons only – they are not meant to re-support a tooth after decay and/or fracture.  Veneers are great to permanently whiten teeth, make minor adjustments for a straighter smile, and/or improve upon teeth shape.

For children, a crown may be used on primary (baby) teeth in order to:
  • Save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can't support a filling.
  • Protect the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.

Zirconia crowns

Does the word zirconia sound familiar to you?  It may, since this metal turns crystalline at very high temperatures, known in the jewelry world as cubic zirconia.  At a slightly lower temperature, it turns white.  The lab will then infuse the appropriate tooth shade, and a new crown is made!  The advantages that come with choosing zirconia and/or zirconia/ceramic crowns are they are made using biocompatible materials, they do not include a dark line and the fact that they are barely noticeable, making them a great choice when one’s front teeth are in need of dental crown restorations.

Gold

The advantages that come with choosing gold crowns are they do not require a lot of tooth removal and they are very strong. This means choosing gold crowns helps to preserve more of the tooth’s structure and are less likely to break. The disadvantages that comes with choosing this crown choice are that they are very visible within the mouth, which for some people are actually considered to be an advantage. This is because many dental patients are choosing to design their smiles, which is now easier than ever to do becasue of the many dental advancements made in recent years.
